Matt Ray and his banjo performing on Centerstage MN on 91.7 KAXE.
It's not too often that the debut release from a band is a double CD, but Matt Ray and Those Damn Horses aren't typical. Complete with washtub bass, harmonica, washboard, spoons, guitar, fiddle and banjo, these guys are a high energy string band from the Iron Range playing roots, Americana, and old time music with a modern twist. Matt Ray joined us talk about the new album "Then and Now". The first CD, "Then", is a collection of traditional tunes they reworked for modern times. Songs that defined their time and built the foundation of the music we hear today. The second CD, "Now", is all original tunes with that same throw-back style under contemporary currents. Kitura Main from the Headwaters Science Center in Bemidji came to the KAXE Studios to help us face our fears during the There's Nothing to be Scared of fundraiser. She brought along turtles, birds, and lizards, which didn't have quite the impact as the tarantula spider and corn snake (not to mention the boa).
During the "There's Nothing to be Scared of" fall fundraiser at KAXE we heard from 364 new/renewing members for $45,120, reaching our goal in the last hour of the pledge drive on Friday night. Going into the last day we had almost $12,000 to go. Northern Community Radio General Manager Maggie Montgomery said, "It was a squeaker for sure. I don't think we've ever had that big of a last day before, ever. People in the community came through again and I hope that means we're doing a good job for them."
Breaking the mold of a typical public radio fundraiser, KAXE uses themes and radio theater to give the pledge drive an edge of entertainment, and this year included DJs getting pulled out of windows by zombies and a horde hidden underneath the studio. As the final pledges came in, all was resolved when the zombies were hauled by truck over to Bemidji for the Lazarus film shoot and KBXE Zombie Crawl. After that the zombie horde was, "not our problem" :)
Listener's once again made our fundraiser successful - and people just like you have been our largest source of funding for almost 35 years of independent community radio in Northern MN. If you missed the pledge drive, you can still show your support by becoming a member now by calling 218-326-1234, 800-662-5799 or pledge online.
From his yet-to-be-released album :) It was a beautiful performance!
On Friday, August 27th, KAXE brought back singer/songwriter Danny Schmidt to Grand Rapids for a concert at KAXE's Amphitheater under the Rotary Tent. Very seldom does KAXE bring back the same musicians two years in a row...but Danny Schmidt is brilliant - quite possibly one the country's best singer songwriters.
Eilen Jewell and her band put on an excellent show - this is one of the slower tunes, 'Boundary County,' which is the title track from her debut CD. Driving all the way from Massachusets to perform on the North bank of the Mississippi River, they are leading a new generation of roots music, part of her music is instantly recognizable, the other part is instantly fresh and innovative.
The 6th Annual 91.7 KAXE Mississippi River Festival was on July 17th, 2010 featuring Pelican Railroad from Bemidji, Steve Kaul and the Brass Kings, Keri Noble, Eilen Jewell and Willie Murphy.
It was a great festival that also included local, handmade art/items from KAXE members.
Though it was looming from time to time, we only got some scattered sprinkles (all the worst weather drifted towards Brainerd).
Keri Noble performing 'When It Don't Come Easy' - which we've heard from a good source is the title track to her forthcoming release! Her music falls into the pop category, but her vocals definitely have that soulful edge.

The Brass Kings area an acoustic roots band operating out of the Twin Cities - singer/songwriter Steve Kaul is from Bemidji, MN. A trio of world-class musicians their performance includes washtup bass, washboard percussion, a butter dish, resonator guitars and more. Their sound and style goes deep into American Roots music with an edge of blues.

Pelican Railroad performing at the 6th Annual 91.7 KAXE Mississippi River Festival. From Bemidji, Pelican Railroad is an eclectic jammin' rock/blues band that plays both originals and unique interpretations. The video goes crazy for a little bit, our camera man Doug MacRostie had to prevent his son from running on stage and taking over :)

Her voice is clear, emotional, powerful. Her music is clever, engaging, intimate. Her name is Mayda, and she performed live at the KAXE Studios June 24th on Centerstage MN. An adoptee from Korea, CSMN host Doug MacRostie said, "her music is so emotional and consuming, so intimate and personal. It's like there is a wildfire blazing away inside of her, and it burns through her music setting anyone who listens ablaze."
Have you ever lost 10 minutes to a daydream? Or maybe drove home and realized you couldn't remember the commute at all? We've all had these moments when it seems our mind was absent, yet we functioned just fine. Stuff like that happens on the KAXE Morning Show all time.
It's the first day of our Come to Our Senses Fundraiser and students from College For Kids helped to write, act and produce this video to encourage people to support independent local radio/multi-media in Northern MN.
KAXE is an non-profit, public broadcast organization working to build community in Northern MN and listener support is vital to our success - infact, it's kept us strong and on the air for over 34 years now. Trampled by Turtles are an eclectic 'new-grass' group hailing from Duluth, MN. They have built a solid following not only regionally but all over the U.S. and beyond with their fiery music and intelligent lyrics building a devoted word-of-mouth army of die-hard fans.
Their new release, "Palomino", debuted at #1 on the Billboard Bluegrass Charts and has been in the top 5 for 5 weeks now - currently back up to #3 (right behind the Carolina Chocolate Drops "Genuine Negro Jig"). This is their 5th album and (as usual) it's excellent. As described on their website, "While using time-honored tools of the trade - guitar, acoustic bass, banjo, mandolin and fiddle - their soul-deep differences in influences, attitude and attack make for a very different musical beast." And that's saying nothing of their unbelievably high-energy live shows...
So, in celebration of the continuing success of Turtles, here is an exclusive video clip we have of them warming up with Rich Mattson at the 10,000 Lakes Festival (r.i.p) last year, mixed in with some of the performance on the main stage (just before Wide Spread Panic!) including both "When the Ship Comes In" and "Shenandoah":
A big thanks to Trampled by Turtles for welcoming Doug MacRostie into their dressing room shortly before taking the main stage! Check out KAXE.org for more info on MN music, and more.
How do you relax at work? KAXE volunteer programmer and Board Member Susan Lick brought in a Head Massager to try and help everyone relax during our staff meetings. Here is the initial test run on General Manager Maggie Montgomery. Want a TRUE head massage? Tune into KAXE!
